Refashion - Jumper to hat & neckwarmer

This lovely ensemble was born out of procrastination. I am supposed to make a few Christmas presents but I just don’t have any ideas what to make, opposed to last year where every single present I gave away was handmade. Seems like Amazon will make some revenue this year :-)

Anyway, while pondering what to make for my mom and mother in law I came across two men’s jumpers, one grey cashmere and the other one dark red cotton. Since it is really cold hereabouts I had a sudden inspiration to make a hat and a neck warmer for myself. The inside of the red jumper is heavenly soft so I used it inside out. The neck warmer closes with Velcro, because I hate the lose ends of a scarf, they are always in the way. This piece of refashion is probably the most comfortable and useful thing I ever made and I almost never take it off!

For the hat I simply measured around my head, subtracted a few centimetres and cut into the lower end of the grey cashmere jumper. I cut out a tube and sewed the open side together, now that I’m in possession of a serger this is a piece of cake! Afterwards I pulled the upper end together and secured it with a few hand stitches. All done!

On both pieces is of course my mandatory skull-appliqué.
Refashion totally rocks, don’t you think so too??

MORE Polka dots!

My mother generously lent me her serger for an undetermined period of time since she is not really using it any longer. It is an old Privileg 4000, purchased used in the eighties but still running (more or less) smoothly! It does have a few quirks, so far I can only serge with it, but not sew. But the serging alone helps me a lot; because once the fabric is serged together my sewing machine manages just fine without any welling or other unpleasantness…
So now I can finally tackle all those projects that call for elastic fabrics! Yippie!

The polka dot top I worked into this refashion is a shirt that I just had to have (I mean, it’s polka dots!) but actually never wore that much because it was a little bit too short for my taste. After it languished in my closet for about two years it time has come to be a refashion, now that I’m in possession of an overlock machine!

I cut off the lower part of top, as it was too short anyway and added a new bottom made of red elastic fabric. Naturally I put a skull-appliqué on it! :-)
Another thing that bothered me about the polka dot shirt was that the arm hole felt uncomfortable. I cut out the elastic that was inside and added instead a red bias tape ribbon. Now the width of the armhole is totally adjustable.

I put the top in to my shop, but with a heavy heart… I need to earn some money for future investments in my sewing studio but I do hope nobody buys it, so I can keep it!

Meine Mutter hat mir großzügigerweise ihre Overlock Maschine auf unbestimmte Zeit überlassen, da sie selbst die Maschine kaum noch benutzt. Es ist eine alte Privileg 4000 Overlock Maschine, die meine Ma in den Achtzigern gebraucht gekauft hat, und sie läuft immer noch einigermaßen rund. Ein paar Marotten hat sie natürlich, da muss ich mich erst einmal hineinarbeiten. Momentan kann ich nur versäubern und nicht nähen, aber das hilft mir auch schon ungemein weiter, da es mit zusammen versäuberten Kanten auch eine normale Nähmaschine gut hinbekommt, glatte Nähte zu produzieren.

Das Polka Dot Shirt, welches meinem andauernden Refashion-Wahn nun zum Opfer gefallen ist, lag schon einige Zeit in meinem Kleiderschrank herum. Ich hab es vor ca. zwei Jahren gekauft, aber kaum getragen weil es mir eigentlich zu kurz war.
Jetzt, da ich endlich eine Overlock habe, fiel es mir leichter es zu zerschneiden, was ich dann auch getan hab. In Kombination mit dem roten Stretch-Stoff sieht es gleich viel hübscher aus! Und die obligatorische Totenkopf-Applikation darf natürlich auch nicht fehlen…
Weiter hat mich an dem T-Shirt der Ärmelausschnitt gestört, darum hab ich den Gummi darin durch ein Band ersetzt, damit man die Ärmelweite frei justieren kann. Jetzt ist es viel angenehmer zu tragen.

Das Top ist in meinen Shop eingezogen, aber eigentlich hoffe ich, dass es niemand kauft. Ich muss zwar Geld verdienen, da ich noch einiges in mein Nähstudio investieren möchte, aber in diesem Fall würd ich es wirklich am Liebsten selbst behalten!!

Refashion - pillow case to apple dress / Apfel-Kleid

Letzten Sommer habe ich auf einem Flohmarkt in Marktl eine tolle alte Kinderbettwäsche mit Apfelmotiv gefunden. Die Bettwäsche ist schon ziemlich alt und verwaschen, aber das trägt meiner Ansicht nach nur noch zu ihrem Charme bei. Überhaupt mag ich alte Stoffe viel lieber als neue, denn erst wenn ein Stoff viele Male gewaschen ist, fühlt er sich so richtig angenehm an. Auch ist es mir am liebsten, wenn wir Second-Hand Klamotten oder aus gebrauchten Stoffen genähtes tragen, da dann diese schrecklichen Appreturen herausgewaschen sind.

Da ich die Bettwäsche so wahnsinnig süß fand, hab ich mich bisher noch gar nicht rein schneiden getraut, aber jedes Mall, wenn ich beim wühlen in meiner Stofftruhe drauf gestoßen bin, hab ich mich gefreut. Vorgestern bin ich dann über eine Anleitung für ein einfaches Kinderkleid gestoßen, welches aus zwei Kopftüchern genäht wird. Da mir Joy's Verschlusslösung so gefallen hat, hab ich beschlossen, das klassische Kissenbezug-Kleid mit diesem zu mischen, und raus gekommen ist dieses wundervolle Stück! Hach! (Ich bin ernsthaft am überlegen, ob ich mir aus dem Bettbezug das gleiche Top machen soll!)

A few months ago I found at our local flea market an adorable vintage children’s bed linen set with apples on it. The bed linen is really old and slightly faded but IMO this only adds to it’s charm! I generally like vintage fabric best because often-washed fabric has this certain pleasant feel about it, at least to me. For my family I prefer to buy second-hand clothes or refashions because new clothes have this terrible finish on them, which I detest.

The bed set is one of those fabrics you are treasuring but never cut into! Until I stumbled over a tutorial for a bandana-dress… I very much liked Joy's original closure of the dress and decided to combine the classic pillow-case dress with this one. The result is absolutely adorable! (I’m seriously contemplating to make one for myself from the duvet cover!)

Wichteln / Secret Santa

Gestern Abend haben wir Mütter der Marktler Mutter-Kind-Gruppe unsere Kleinen den Papas in die Hände gedrückt und haben eine kleine Weihnachtsfeier veranstaltet. Das Highlight der gelungenen Feier war das Wichteln. Nach viel Gelächter hatte jeder sein Päckchen. Dass mein Wichtelgeschenk was Genähtes war, versteht sich von selbst! Mit einer Notizbuchhülle kann man eigentlich kaum daneben liegen. Ich mag zwar so ziemlich alle anderen Mamas in unserer Gruppe gern, trotzdem hat es mich besonders gefreut, dass die liebe Ramona mein Geschenk abbekommen hat. Da ist es in guten Händen und sie hat sich total drüber gefreut :-)

Last night the moms of our local Mother-Child-Group met up for a (child- and husbandless!) Christmas party. The highlight of the meeting was a round of secret Santa, which was hilarious. In the end every one ended up with a more or less random gift, and I was very pleased that my friend Ramona actually received my gift (which was of course handmade!) She was very happy about it, too :-)

Petulant Patchwork Pinkchunky edition

My best friend is a very talented painter and paints under the funny pseudonym “Pinkchunky”.

Ever since Pinkchunky and I met a few years ago we have been creating together or brought inspiration to each other. Even though our influences and tools of trade are vastly different, our art seems to gravitate towards each other, at least that’s what it feels like for me.

A few months ago she was bored at a friend’s house and whipped up this colourful picture. I fell instantly in love with it. Especially the little skull on the headphone drew my attention. It practically begged to be incorporated into one of my projects!



I printed the skull out and copied it with a light table onto pink fabric. Afterwards I used the quilting setting on my machine and tried my hand at freehand embroidery. For a first attempt it did turn out pretty OK, if I do say so myself…

Well, Pinkchunky is in raptures over it and of course she’ll get it once she is back from studying abroad.

Meine beste Freundin ist eine sehr talentierte Künstlerin und malt unter dem witzigen Pseudonym “Pinkchunky”.

Seit wir beide uns vor einigen Jahren kennen gelernt haben, sind wir immerzu am gemeinsamen „kreieren“ oder wir inspirieren uns gegenseitig. Obwohl unsere Einflüsse und Handwerkszeuge recht unterschiedlich sind, zieht es unsere Kunst irgendwie immer zueinander, jedenfalls fühlt es sich für mich so an.

Vor ein paar Monaten war ihr Mal langweilig und da hat sie dann einfach so diesen bunten Fächer aus dem Ärmel geschüttelt. Was für ein tolles Bild! Vor allem der kleine Totenkopf auf dem Kopfhörer hat es mir angetan. Der hat gerade danach geschrieen, in ein Nähprojekt eingearbeitet zu werden.

Ich hab mir kurzerhand den Totenkopf ausgedruckt und mit einem Leuchttisch auf pinke Baumwolle übertragen. Danach habe ich dann mit der Quilt-Einstellung eine Freihand-Stickerei versucht. Für einen ersten Versuch gar nicht so schlecht, das ist auf jeden Fall ausbaufähig!

Pinkchunky ist jedenfalls begeistert von dem Notizbuch und natürlich wird sie es auch bekommen sobald sie wieder von ihrem Auslandsstudium zurück ist!

Refashion - skull & Polka dot top

A while ago I was given a bag full of gently used clothes, among them a polka dot shirt and a black elastic top. This top my sister is modelling here is what I came up with:

I’m totally in love with the top, but alas, it is a size S (36) and there is no way for me to press my self into it with any remaining dignity *sigh*.

Vor ein paar Wochen habe ich eine Tüte voll mit schönen „Altkleidern“ (kein Stück war wirklich alt!) geschenkt bekommen, darunter auch ein Tupfen-Shirt und ein elastisches schwarzes Top. Und das ist daraus geworden, professionell präsentiert von meiner Schwester:

Ich bin ganz verliebt in das Top, aber leider (leider) ist es in Größe S (36), und da pass ich nun wirklich nicht rein… *seufz*
Darum zieht das Top in meinen Shop (Hey das reimt sich! Und was sich reimt ist gut, hat schließlich schon der Pumuckl gesagt)

Idiot strings 2.0

A while ago I came across the word „Idiot strings“ in one of my favourite comics „Frazz“ by Jef Mallett. Words like that are why I’m so in love with the English language.

Winter has finally arrived here, even though there is no snow yet temperatures have dropped considerably. Unfortunately, my wee one is allergic to mittens; at least she acts like it...
After scolding her like a zillion times for taking her mittens off and me putting them on again, I had quite enough. At first I considered adding idiot strings to them but they would not stop her from peeling the mittens off, only from losing them. So I thought further and “Idiot strings 2.0” were born! (I’m sure someone else thought of this before, but being original is not easy these days!)

I simply cut out mittens from an old fleece blanket, sewed them together and put them (permanently) on a zippered sweatshirt. Tada! Stuffed in her jacket it is impossible to get the mittens off! I guess I’ll make another one so I have a spare in case she gets the mittens wet in her sandbox…

Vor einer Weile bin ich in einem meiner Lieblings-Comics (Frazzby Jef Mallett) über das Wort „Idiot strings“ gestolpert. Frei übersetzt ins Bayerische heißt das „Deppen-Schnirl“ (Deppen-Schnur, für Leser außerhalb des Freistaats), und gemeint ist damit die Schnur, welche bei kleinen Kindern die zwei Handschuhe verbindet.
Worte wie „Idiot Strings“ sind mitunter ein Grund, warum ich die englische Sprache so liebe…

Der Winter ist ja nun endlich auch hier angekommen, zwar noch ohne Schnee, dafür mit fallenden Temperaturen. Unglücklicherweise ist mein Kind allergisch gegen Handschuhe, jedenfalls verhält sie sich so. Nachdem ich sie unzählige Male geschimpft und ihr die Handschuhe wieder angezogen habe, ist es mir zu dumm geworden. Zuerst dachte ich eben an jene „Idiot Strings“, aber die helfen ja nicht gegen das Ausziehen, nur gegen das Verlieren. Also weiter überlegt, und plötzlich waren die „Idiot Strings 2.0“ geboren! (Da ist zwar mit Sicherheit schon jemand anderes vor mir drauf gekommen, aber was soll’s?!)

Aus einer alten Fleece-Decke hab ich kurzerhand zwei Fäustlinge ausgeschnitten, verstürzt und an eine Sweatshirt-Jacke genäht. Tada! Wenn man das Kind mit der Jacke in eine Winterjacke steckt, hat es KEINE Chance, die Handschuhe loszuwerden! Haben wir heute Nachmittag schon ausprobiert, hat wunderbar geklappt. Jetzt brauch ich nur noch ein zweites Paar, falls dieses Paar mal im Sandkasten eingeweicht wird…
